What a Ukrainian document needs

Three things a Ukrainian document brings with it

Ukrainian has its own official way into the Latin alphabet, and documents from different decades spell the same name differently.

Kostiantyn, not Konstantin

Ukraine’s official transliteration table turns Костянтин into Kostiantyn and drops the soft sign and the apostrophe. Older papers may carry a Russian-style spelling instead. The translation follows your current passport, so every document in your file shows one name.

Latin letters on the licence

A Ukrainian licence repeats its first four fields, your name and dates among them, in Latin letters. The categories, the codes and the issuing body are still in Ukrainian or in abbreviations. The translation sets out every field in English and keeps the Latin spelling already on the card.

A phone screen is not the card

A licence shown in the Diia app does not travel well. Europcar’s FAQ says: “Licenses must be produced in person at the Europcar location at the time of collection. (No copy will be accepted)”. Bring the physical card, and have the translation made from both sides of it.

Two things to check first

A free translation, and the road rules

The Free Translating Service

“Permanent residents and eligible visa holders can get up to 10 personal documents translated into English for free.” You must be in Australia, and your visa must have been granted in the last two years. Check whether yours is on the list before you pay anyone.

Driving in Tasmania, for example

“You can drive/ride in Tasmania using your overseas licence if you are a visitor or have a temporary visa”, and “If your licence is not in English you must also carry an official translation or international drivers permit.” Other states word it their own way.

Each state’s rule is on driver licence translation, and who the Free Translating Service is for sets out its limits, including what it will not translate.

What a careful job includes

Every field, every entry, both sides

The whole licence

Both sides of the card: name and patronymic, date and place of birth, issue and expiry dates, the issuing service centre, the licence number, and each category with its dates, all in English.

Patronymics kept in place

A Ukrainian name carries a patronymic, Ivanovych or Ivanivna, made from the father’s given name. The translation labels it as a patronymic, so it is not read as a middle name or a surname.

Certificates, extracts and diplomas

Birth, marriage and divorce certificates, extracts from the civil status register, police certificates, and diplomas with their supplements, translated table for table. Unreadable text is marked in square brackets.

Choose the NAATI certification option for a translation prepared by a NAATI-certified translator, carrying their certification statement, NAATI stamp and credential number. See the birth certificate and marriage certificate pages for those documents.
