What a Bulgarian document needs

Three things a Bulgarian document brings with it

Bulgarian is written in Cyrillic, with a legal table for turning it into Latin letters and a personal number that encodes the date of birth.

Sht, ts and a

Bulgaria’s Transliteration Act sets one table for Latin letters: Щ becomes sht, Ц becomes ts, Ъ becomes a, Ю becomes yu. A name in an older passport may be spelled another way. The translation follows your current passport, so all your papers agree.

The EGN

The EGN, your 10-digit personal number, begins with your date of birth and appears on most Bulgarian records. It is copied digit for digit, so an Australian office can match the certificate, the licence and the passport to one person.

Family status and multilingual extracts

A certificate of family status lists a spouse and children, the kind of record a visa file often needs, and every person on it is translated. Birth and marriage records can also come as multilingual Vienna Convention extracts; see documents already in English first.

What to carry with a Bulgarian licence

What Western Australia says

“You must carry your current overseas licence and a translation, or an International Drivers’ Permit (IDP) with you while driving.” Current is the word to check: renew before you travel if your card is close to expiry.

At the SIXT desk

“Should the valid driver’s licence be in another language or have no photo SIXT will accept a certified translation in English or an International driver’s permit.” SIXT’s rental terms name a NAATI-certified translation.

What a careful job includes

Every name, every number, both sides

Your licence in full

Front and reverse: your Cyrillic and Latin name, date and place of birth, validity dates, the issuing traffic police office, and the category table with every code put into English.

Civil status certificates

Birth, marriage and death certificates and certificates of family status, translated with the municipality, the record number and any later annotation.

Diplomas and other records

Diplomas with their supplements, transcripts, conviction status certificates and court papers. Seals and signatures are marked where they appear; a word the photo hides is marked [illegible].

Choose the NAATI certification option for a translation prepared by a NAATI-certified translator, carrying their certification statement, NAATI stamp and credential number. See the birth certificate and marriage certificate pages for those documents.
