What a Macedonian document needs

Three things a Macedonian document brings with it

Macedonian Cyrillic has letters of its own, and the country itself has changed its name within living memory.

Ѓ, Ќ and the Latin spelling

Macedonian Cyrillic includes letters such as ѓ, ќ, ѕ and џ, which appear in Latin letters as gj, kj, dz and dzh, or with accents, depending on the document. The translation uses your passport’s spelling for your name, so every paper in your file agrees.

Macedonia or North Macedonia

Since 2019 the country has been the Republic of North Macedonia; older papers say Republic of Macedonia, and older still, Yugoslavia. The translation keeps the name each document uses, as printed, because that is what the document says.

The EMBG

The EMBG, your 13-digit unique personal number, appears on most records and is copied digit for digit. Extracts may also come on the multilingual Vienna Convention form; if yours reads in English where it matters, see documents already in English.

Driving here on a Macedonian licence

What to carry with a Macedonian licence

What Tasmania says

“You can drive/ride in Tasmania using your overseas licence if you are a visitor or have a temporary visa”, and “If your licence is not in English you must also carry an official translation or international drivers permit.”

At the Europcar desk

Europcar’s rental terms accept a licence not in English with “an accurate translation in English of Your current licence issued by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) that includes a full explanation written in English of any condition to which Your licence is subject and the category of vehicle for which Your licence was issued.” Each category and restriction code on your card is therefore written out in English.

Every state’s wording is on driver licence translation; for the hire counter, see renting a car on an overseas licence.

What a careful job includes

Every field, every entry, both sides

Licence, both sides

Name in Cyrillic and Latin, date and place of birth, validity dates, the issuing office, and the category table on the back, each code set out in English.

Extracts and citizenship certificates

Birth, marriage and death extracts and citizenship certificates, with the registry, the entry number and every note added later.

Diplomas and court papers

Diplomas and supplements, transcripts, court decisions and criminal record certificates. Where your photo hides a word, the translation marks it [illegible].

Choose the NAATI certification option for a translation prepared by a NAATI-certified translator, carrying their certification statement, NAATI stamp and credential number. See the birth certificate and marriage certificate pages for those documents.
