What a Czech document needs

Three things a Czech document brings with it

Czech records carry surname forms, numbers and register references that an Australian reader will not know how to read.

-ová, or not

A Czech woman’s surname usually takes -ová: Novák’s wife or daughter is Nováková. Since 2022 a woman may register the masculine form instead, so one family’s records can show both. The translation keeps each person’s surname exactly as registered.

The birth number

The rodné číslo begins with the date of birth, and for a woman 50 is added to the month, so 755212 means 12 February 1975. It is copied exactly as printed, with its slash, and never “corrected” to look like a date.

Rodný list, oddačí list

The birth certificate (rodný list), marriage certificate (oddačí list) and death certificate (úmrtní list) each cite the register volume, page and entry number. Those references are translated too, so the reader can see exactly which register entry the certificate comes from.

What to carry with a Czech licence

What Tasmania says

“If your licence is not in English you must also carry an official translation or international drivers permit.” The page also refers to “an English translation of your licence by a person accredited to translate”, and the NAATI option is exactly that.

At the Budget desk

A licence not in English “must be accompanied by an approved translation such as an International Driving Permit”. A translation, like a permit, is shown with the card and never instead of it.

What a careful job includes

Every field, every register reference

Your licence, both sides

Name, date and place of birth, validity dates, the municipal authority that issued it, and each category on the reverse with its dates and codes, all put into English.

Civil records in full

Birth, marriage and death certificates, with the registry office, the register reference and any note added later about a marriage, divorce or change of name.

Diplomas and extracts

Diplomas with their supplements, transcripts and criminal record extracts. Seals and signatures are marked where they appear, and anything unreadable in your photo is marked [illegible].

Choose the NAATI certification option for a translation prepared by a NAATI-certified translator, carrying their certification statement, NAATI stamp and credential number. See the birth certificate and marriage certificate pages for those documents.
