What a Slovak document needs

Three things a Slovak document brings with it

Slovak shares a past with Czech but has its own letters, its own certificate names and older records from a country that no longer exists.

Rodný list, sobášny list

A Slovak birth certificate is a rodný list, a marriage certificate a sobášny list, a death certificate an úmrtný list. Each is issued by a registry office from its register, and the translation carries the office, the register reference and every later entry.

Ä, ľ, ô and the rest

Slovak adds letters an English keyboard lacks, ä, ľ, ĺ, ô and ŕ among them, and women’s surnames usually end in -ová. The translation spells every name as your passport does and keeps each person’s own surname form.

Czechoslovak records and the birth number

Documents from before 1993 were issued by Czechoslovakia, and the translation keeps that name as printed. Slovakia kept the old birth number, date first, then a slash and three or four digits; numbers given before 1954 have the shorter ending. Each is copied exactly.

Driving here on a Slovak licence

What to carry with a Slovak licence

What New South Wales says

“If your licence is not written in English, you must also carry an English translation, or an International Driving Permit.” For a tourist or temporary overseas visitor, NSW says you “can drive in NSW using your overseas licence for up to six months”, on conditions it lists.

At the Europcar desk

Europcar’s rental terms accept a licence not in English with “an accurate translation in English of Your current licence issued by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) that includes a full explanation written in English of any condition to which Your licence is subject and the category of vehicle for which Your licence was issued.” The category table on the back of your card is what that sentence is about.

What a careful job includes

Every letter, every entry, both sides

Front and back of the licence

Your name, birth date and place, the issuing police department, validity dates and the full category table, each code explained in English rather than left as a number.

Registry certificates

Birth, marriage and death certificates and extracts, with the registry office, the register volume and entry, and any later annotation about marriage, divorce or a change of name.

Diplomas and criminal record extracts

Diplomas, supplements, transcripts and criminal record extracts, seal by seal. If a word in your photo cannot be read, the translation marks it [illegible] instead of guessing.

Choose the NAATI certification option for a translation prepared by a NAATI-certified translator, carrying their certification statement, NAATI stamp and credential number. See the birth certificate and marriage certificate pages for those documents.
