What an Italian document needs

Three things an Italian record brings with it

Italian documents come from Italy, San Marino and the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland. Whichever office issued yours, we translate what is on the page.

Certificate, extract or full copy

A comune can issue the same birth or marriage record as a short certificato, an estratto or a copia integrale of the whole act, and each carries a different amount of detail. We translate the one you hold. If the office reading it wants the full record, ask the comune for the copia integrale before you pay for a translation of a shorter one.

The multilingual extract

Italian comuni also issue multilingual extracts, the estratti plurilingue of the 1976 Vienna Convention, whose field labels repeat in several languages. If yours already reads in English where it matters, our guide to documents already in English says when that is enough and when it is not. Romanian offices issue multilingual extracts too: see Romanian to English translation.

Tax codes, province codes and dates

The codice fiscale, sixteen letters and numbers, is copied character for character. A province code in brackets, such as (RM) or (MI), is written out, so an Australian reader sees Rome or Milan. Dates run day-month-year, and the translation spells the month out so day and month cannot be swapped.

Driving here on an Italian licence

What to carry with an Italian patente

What South Australia says

SA accepts “a current licence with an English translation if necessary or an international driver’s licence”, and adds: “You must carry your licence documents at all times when driving, and produce these and your passport to police on request.” The translation travels with your patente; it does not replace it.

At the Hertz desk

Hertz’s terms accept a licence that “is in English or, if not in English, is accompanied by a certified English translation”. They do not say what certified means. The NAATI option is the closest match to that word.

On a working holiday and driving for months? How long you can drive on an overseas licence sets out each state’s limit, and renting a car on an overseas licence quotes every major hire company.

What a careful job includes

Every field, every stamp, both sides

The whole patente

Both sides of the card: surname and given names, date and place of birth, issue and expiry dates, the issuing office, the licence number, and each category on the back with its own dates and any restriction code, written out in words.

Names as your passport spells them

Italian names use the Latin alphabet, but a double given name, an accent or an apostrophe (Niccolò, D’Angelo) can be written more than one way. We follow your passport, so the patente, the certificate and the passport agree.

Civil records in full

Birth, marriage and death records, police certificates, degrees and transcripts. Every stamp, seal and later annotation is translated where it appears. Anything with no words, or that cannot be read in the photo, is marked in square brackets.

Choose the NAATI certification option for a translation prepared by a NAATI-certified translator, carrying their certification statement, NAATI stamp and credential number. See the birth certificate and marriage certificate pages for those documents.
