Darwin, Northern Territory
NAATI translation in Darwin
Order from anywhere in Greater Darwin, with no trip into the city: photograph your document, order online, and the translation arrives by email as a PDF. The same goes for the rest of the Northern Territory. NAATI certification is an option, prepared by a NAATI-certified translator, for Home Affairs and the other offices that name one. One exception: we do not translate a licence for use in the Territory.

What the Territory and Home Affairs say
Quoted rather than paraphrased. The Territory’s licence rules are the reason we do not sell licence translations here, so they come first, in its own words, and each source says when we checked it.
Driving in the NT as a visitor
The Territory’s page says “you can drive with your interstate or overseas licence for up to 3 months”, and then: “you must apply for an international driving permit if: your overseas licence is not written in English”. Unlike the states, the NT starts from the permit: its page says to apply for one before you travel, and a translation comes in only on the narrower terms in the next card.

Where a translation comes in, and why it is not ours
Without a permit, the same page asks for “an official translation of your overseas licence into English”, which “must be done by an authorised translator in the NT”. The page does not say who counts as one; its link for the translation goes to the NT Government’s Interpreting and Translating Service NT (ITSNT), whose terms say “Translations will be completed by a NAATI certified translator and will include the appropriate certification statement.” and “Customers located outside Australia will receive a secure payment link after the request has been received.” The Territory’s page also sets the limit for staying on: “If you remain in the NT for a continuous period of more than 3 months, you must transfer to an NT driver licence.” We are not an authorised translator in the NT, so we do not sell a translation for the Northern Territory, for a transfer or for driving. With a permit or a translation, the page lists a condition: “you carry your licence with you at all times whilst driving.”

A permit comes from home
The Australian Automobile Association, which issues permits here, is asked directly whether an overseas licence holder can get one in Australia: “No. Only Australian driver licence holders can apply for an IDP in Australia. If you hold an overseas driver licence you must apply for a permit in the country that issued your licence.”
If you are already in Australia with the Territory ahead of you, the AAA will not issue you one here. Whether the body that issued your licence will take an application from abroad is a question for that body.

Documents for a visa application
Home Affairs’ checklist for the onshore partner visa says: “Have all documents translated into English. Provide original and translated documents in your application. Translators in Australia must be accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters.” That part of the order is the same from Darwin as from anywhere else: choose the NAATI option, prepared by a NAATI-certified translator. See partner visa document translation.
Driving for Uber in Darwin? Uber’s requirement for the Territory is that you have “held a driver’s licence (Australian or overseas) for at least 12 months in the last 3 years”, and its Uber Eats line on overseas licences for car delivery names “NSW, VIC, QLD, ACT, SA and WA”, not the NT. A licence translation for use in the Territory is not something we sell. See Uber, DiDi or Uber Eats on an overseas licence.

Getting married in the NT with documents from overseas? Every celebrant in Australia follows the same national guidelines, which say a celebrant “should ask the couple to seek an official NAATI certified translation of the document”, so choose the NAATI certification option; see marrying in Australia with foreign documents. For an Australian passport, the Passport Office points you to NAATI to find a translator, and the government agencies it names include Interpreting and Translating Services NT; see passport application translation.
Home Affairs still uses the word accredited; NAATI replaced accreditation with certification in 2018 (NAATI accredited or certified?), and our NAATI option is prepared by a NAATI-certified translator. The Territory’s licence position in full is on when we will tell you not to order and International Driving Permit or translation?, and what driving without one can cost is on penalties for driving on a foreign licence with no translation.
Ordering from Darwin
No trip into the city, and no counter to queue at
From anywhere in the Territory
Photograph every page, front and back, and place your order online from home, work or a hotel room. The full price is on screen before you pay, in Australian dollars, and we add nothing at checkout. Up to 4 pages online; a longer document is priced by email first.
Three delivery windows
Normal delivery is within 3 days and is included. Urgent is 12–24 hours, and ASAP arrives within 4 hours where a translator for your language is available at that moment. All three are estimates. We do not deliver on Sundays: a delivery that would fall on a Sunday arrives on the Monday. Each surcharge is shown on the order page.
Translation prices start from $19.99 AUD per page; the full price, including the NAATI option and the delivery speed, is shown on the order page before you pay.
If an office wants paper
Nothing is printed or posted. The PDF prints on any printer, and on the NAATI option the translator’s digital stamp carries a QR code that can be scanned from paper. Where a printed copy is enough, and where it is not, is in PDF or hard copy?
Darwin time and Brisbane time. You can call, text, WhatsApp, email or order 24/7. Only the estimated dates on the order page and the Sunday rule run on Brisbane time. Neither Queensland nor the Northern Territory has daylight saving, so the gap never changes: Darwin is half an hour behind Brisbane all year. A delivery that would fall on a Sunday moves to Monday on Brisbane time, and that Monday starts at 11:30pm on Sunday in Darwin.

NAATI translations don’t expire
NAATI’s own FAQ says it in three words: “Translations don’t expire.” Translate once, keep the PDF and use it again while your document stays the same.
This applies to our NAATI option, available on the order page. A renewed or reissued document needs a new translation, and each office sets its own requirements; tell us who it is for and we’ll check what they ask for. Do NAATI translations expire?
Common questions
Questions about ordering from Darwin
No. We are a Brisbane-based online service in Queensland with no shopfront in Darwin, and you do not need one: photograph the document, order online, and the translation arrives by email as a PDF. If the office you are dealing with wants a printed copy, print the PDF; on the NAATI option, the translator’s stamp and QR code print with it.
You choose one of three speeds when you order, and each has an estimated delivery time rather than a fixed one. Normal is within 3 days, Urgent 12–24 hours, and ASAP within 4 hours where a translator for your language is available. We do not deliver on Sundays: a delivery that would fall on a Sunday arrives on the Monday. Urgent and ASAP are priced on the order page. The order page shows the estimated dates against each one before you commit, worked out on Brisbane time; Darwin is half an hour behind Brisbane all year. What decides how long a translation takes is in our guide.
No. The Territory’s page says any translation “must be done by an authorised translator in the NT”, which we are not, and tells a visitor whose licence is not in English to apply for an international driving permit before travelling. We do not sell a translation for the Northern Territory, for a transfer or for driving. A permit comes from the country that issued your licence: the Australian Automobile Association says only Australian licence holders can apply for one here.
Home Affairs’ checklist for the onshore partner visa says “Translators in Australia must be accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters.” Choose the NAATI certification option, prepared by a NAATI-certified translator. Standard is a translation with no statement or stamp, for when nobody has asked for certification. Not sure which fits? Message us before you order.
Yes, for documents. The order runs online, so it works the same anywhere in the Territory: photograph the document, order from your phone, and the PDF arrives by email. The one thing we do not sell anywhere in the NT is a licence translation for use there.
