Tamil to English
Tamil to English translation
For families, students and partners who need a Tamil birth, marriage or school record from Sri Lanka or India in English, for a visa or an office in Australia. Translated in full, delivered by email, with NAATI certification as an option.
What a Tamil document needs
Three things a Tamil document brings with it
Tamil records come from Sri Lanka, India, Singapore and Malaysia, and each country writes names and forms its own way.
An English copy from Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka’s Registrar General’s Department translates birth certificates from Tamil into English itself, for Rs 600 a copy, in three working days. If you already hold one, ask the office reading it whether it will do before you pay for a second translation.
Initials and a father’s name
Many Tamil names carry no family surname. A father’s name may appear as an initial before the given name, or stand in the surname place on a passport. The translation follows your passport and labels a father’s name as a father’s name, so the reader does not invent a surname.
Tamil script, English headings
Tamil is written in its own script. Some certificates print their headings in Tamil and English while the entries are handwritten in Tamil; the entries are what need translating. Every column is translated, including the registrar’s later remarks and corrections, and each date is written with the month in letters so day and month cannot be swapped.
For a visa or an Australian office
Who may translate, in Home Affairs’ words
Translated in Australia
“All documents not in English must be translated into English. Translators in Australia must be accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters.” A Tamil record translated here for a visa file should meet that line, and the NAATI certification option is the one that does.

Translated in Sri Lanka or India
The partner visa checklist says translators outside Australia “do not have to be accredited”, but each translation must include their “full name; address and telephone number; qualifications and experience in the language they are translating”, and “These details must be in English.” An English copy from the Registrar General’s Department is made outside Australia too, so see whether it carries those details before you rely on it.

What a careful job includes
Every column, every remark
Civil registration forms
Birth, marriage and death certificates are translated column by column, with the registrar’s name, the registration number and date, and any amendment written in the margin.
Names that match your passport
Tamil names can be romanised several ways. We use the spelling in your passport for your name, and the spelling on your other documents for everyone else, so the file reads as one story.
School and academic records
School leaving certificates, mark sheets, degree certificates and transcripts, with every seal and signature marked where it appears. Text that cannot be read in the photo is marked in square brackets.
Choose the NAATI certification option for a translation prepared by a NAATI-certified translator, carrying their certification statement, NAATI stamp and credential number. See the birth certificate and marriage certificate pages for those documents.
