What a Telugu document needs

Three things a Telugu document brings with it

Telugu names put the family first, land is recorded in a passbook, and the map changed in 2014.

Family name first

A Telugu name usually starts with the family name, often shortened to an initial: C. Venkata Rao is Venkata Rao of the Chintakayala family. A passport may move it to the end. The translation labels each part and follows your passport, so the reader does not take the family name for a first name.

The pattadar passbook

Land holdings are recorded in a pattadar passbook, listing the holder, survey numbers, extent and entries made over the years. It is often sent as evidence of family assets, and every page with an entry is translated, numbers copied exactly.

Andhra Pradesh or Telangana

Telangana became a separate state on 2 June 2014, so older documents name Andhra Pradesh for places now in Telangana. The translation keeps the state and district names each document uses, as printed, rather than updating them.

Who may translate, in Home Affairs’ words

A translation made here

“All documents not in English must be translated into English. Translators in Australia must be accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters.” For a passbook or certificate translated here for a visa, choose the NAATI certification option.

A translation made at home

The partner visa checklist says translators outside Australia “do not have to be accredited”, though each translation must give their “full name; address and telephone number; qualifications and experience in the language they are translating”. Check one made in Hyderabad or Vijayawada against that.

Many Indian certificates already print English beside the Telugu: documents already in English explains when that is enough. Building a partner visa file? Partner visa documents.
