What a Bosnian document needs

Three things a Bosnian document brings with it

One country, three official languages and two alphabets, with records reaching back to Yugoslavia.

Three languages, two alphabets

A document from Bosnia and Herzegovina may be written in Bosnian, Croatian or Serbian, in Latin or Cyrillic letters, depending on where it was issued. NAATI certifies each language separately, so if you are unsure which one your document is in, ask us first and we will match it before you pay.

Yugoslav-era forms

Older certificates were issued on forms of the Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, within Yugoslavia. The translation keeps every state and place name exactly as printed, rather than updating it, because the reader needs to see what the document says.

Municipal registers and your JMB

Each birth, marriage or death is entered in the register of the municipality where it happened, and that office issues the extract, sometimes on a multilingual international form that may make a translation unnecessary (see documents already in English). Your JMB, 13 digits long, appears on most records and is reproduced exactly.

What to carry with a Bosnian licence

What the ACT says

Access Canberra accepts “an overseas licence not in English, with an official English translation”, and lists an embassy or consulate, the Department of Home Affairs and a NAATI-certified translator among the sources it accepts.

At the Europcar desk

Europcar’s rental terms accept a licence not in English with “an accurate translation in English of Your current licence issued by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) that includes a full explanation written in English of any condition to which Your licence is subject and the category of vehicle for which Your licence was issued.” So every category and code on your card is spelled out in English.

Your licence has both sides for a reason: why a licence translation shows both sides. Every state’s rule is on driver licence translation.

What a careful job includes

Every field, every entry, both sides

Licence, front and back

Name, birth date and place, the dates of issue and expiry, the police administration that issued it, and the category table on the reverse, each code explained in plain English.

Registry extracts in full

A birth, marriage or death extract is translated with the municipality, the volume and entry number of the register, and any note added later about a marriage, divorce or change of name.

Study and court papers

Diplomas with their supplements, transcripts, and court judgments, stamp for stamp. Where a word cannot be made out in your photo, the translation says [illegible] rather than guessing.

Choose the NAATI certification option for a translation prepared by a NAATI-certified translator, carrying their certification statement, NAATI stamp and credential number. See the birth certificate and marriage certificate pages for those documents.
