What a Vietnamese document needs

Familiar letters, easy to get wrong

Vietnamese is written in Latin letters, so it looks familiar at first glance. The meaning sits in the details.

Marks that change meaning

Vietnamese uses the Latin alphabet with diacritics, and those marks change meaning. A careful translation keeps every name exactly as it is printed on the document, then gives the plain romanisation from your passport beside it, so both records line up.

Family name first

On a Vietnamese document the family name comes first. The translation follows the order on the document and makes clear which part is the family name, so nothing is swapped when the English version is read.

Red seals, handwriting and dates

The giấy khai sinh (birth certificate) and driver licences carry red official seals, and older versions have handwritten entries. Each seal and each handwritten line is translated. Dates run day-month-year.

What to carry with a Vietnamese licence

What VicRoads says

“If your licence is not in English, you’ll also need to carry either: an English translation of your licence, or an international driving permit in English.” The translation sits beside your Vietnamese licence; it does not replace it.

At the rental desk

Europcar’s rental terms accept either an International Driving Permit issued in the same country as the licence, or an English translation issued by NAATI that fully explains any licence conditions and the vehicle category. The NAATI option is the one that matches that wording, and the one to choose for driving as well.

What a careful job includes

Every seal, every line, both sides

The full licence

Both sides of the card, in full: name, date of birth, licence number, categories or classes, conditions and restrictions, issue and expiry dates, issuing authority, and every stamp or code.

Names that match your passport

Your name is romanised to match the spelling in your passport, with the marked Vietnamese form kept from the original, so the translation, the licence and the passport agree with one another.

Civil documents too

Birth, marriage, divorce and death certificates, police certificates, passports and ID pages, and academic records. The wording on stamps, seals and marginal notes is translated in full, not summarised. A seal with no words, or text that cannot be read in the photo, is marked in square brackets.

Choose the NAATI certification option for a translation prepared by a NAATI-certified translator, carrying their certification statement, NAATI stamp and credential number. See the birth certificate and marriage certificate pages for those documents.
