Dari to English
Dari to English translation
For Afghan families, students and workers who need a tazkira, a marriage certificate or a school record in English. Check the free government service first; where it does not reach, we translate in full, by email, with NAATI certification as an option.
What a Dari document needs
Three things an Afghan document brings with it
Dari runs right to left and dates by the Solar Hijri calendar, and Afghan records name people in their own way.
Afghan month names
Afghanistan uses the Solar Hijri calendar, like Iran, but names its months after the zodiac: Hamal, Sawr, Jawza and on through the year, where Iran says Farvardin, Ordibehesht, Khordad. The translation converts each date to the Western calendar and keeps the original in brackets. Dates and calendars shows the sums.
A tazkira that gives an age
A paper tazkira often records the holder’s age in the year it was issued, usually an estimate, rather than a date of birth. The translation says exactly what yours says, the age and the year included, and does not work out a birthday that the document never gave.
Fathers’ and grandfathers’ names
Many Afghans have no fixed family name, and Afghan records name the father and often the grandfather. The translation keeps each name in its labelled place and uses your passport’s spelling for your own, so a reader does not turn a father’s name into your surname. Tazkira and passport disagree? See which spelling goes on the translation.
Before you pay anyone
The free government service comes first
Check the Free Translating Service
“Permanent residents and eligible visa holders can get up to 10 personal documents translated into English for free.” The conditions include: “Your visa must be granted in the past 2 years, and still valid (not cancelled or expired).” And: “You need to be onshore (in Australia) to access the service.”

What it will not translate
“Only personal documents that assist with employment, education, and community engagement are accepted”, and “Document translations required for visa or citizenship applications, and documents issued by private citizens, are not eligible.” For a visa file, the NAATI certification option is the one that matches Home Affairs’ wording.

What a careful job includes
Every page, every stamp
Paper or electronic tazkira
Every page or both sides of the card, with the registration volume and page numbers, the issuing office, each seal and signature, and every date converted with the original kept alongside.
Names that match your passport
Dari names can be romanised several ways: Mohammad or Muhammad, Ahmadi or Ahmady. We follow your passport for your own name and your other documents for everyone else’s.
Marriage, school and court records
Marriage certificates, school certificates, university degrees and transcripts, and court documents, translated in full. Text that cannot be read in the photo is marked in square brackets rather than guessed.
Choose the NAATI certification option for a translation prepared by a NAATI-certified translator, carrying their certification statement, NAATI stamp and credential number. See the birth certificate and marriage certificate pages for those documents.
