What an Urdu document needs

Three things an Urdu document brings with it

Many Pakistani documents already carry English. The ones that do not are often handwritten, and that is where care matters most.

The nikah nama

The nikah nama is a printed Urdu form completed by hand at the ceremony: the couple, their fathers, the witnesses, the dower (haq mehr) and any conditions agreed. Every column is translated, handwritten entries and the registrar’s stamp included, so the reader sees the whole contract, not a summary of it.

Father’s name, not a surname

Pakistani records often identify a person by a father’s or husband’s name rather than a family name, and the CNIC has a field for it. The translation keeps that field as its own field and follows your passport’s spelling, so no one reads your father’s name as your own.

Check the English first

The CNIC already carries its main details in English as well as Urdu, and some certificates do the same. If the part your reader needs is already in English, see documents already in English before you order. Where a date is given in the Islamic calendar, the translation converts it and keeps the original in square brackets.

For a partner or family visa

Who may translate, in Home Affairs’ words

Translated in Australia

“All documents not in English must be translated into English. Translators in Australia must be accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters.” For a translation made here, choose the NAATI certification option.

Translated in Pakistan

The partner visa checklist says translators outside Australia “do not have to be accredited”, but each translation must include their “full name; address and telephone number; qualifications and experience in the language they are translating”, and “These details must be in English.” If a translation made at home shows all of that, you may not need a second one.

Assembling a partner visa file? Partner visa documents that need English translation goes through the checklist. The Free Translating Service may cover some documents if you arrived recently on an eligible visa.

What a careful job includes

Every column, every stamp

Affidavits on stamp paper

An affidavit or agreement typed on stamp paper is translated with the paper itself: its printed value, serial number and the vendor’s stamp, then the text, the signatures and the attesting officer’s seal.

Names that match your passport

Urdu runs right to left, and one name can be romanised several ways. We use the spelling in your passport for every name in the document, so the nikah nama, the family record and the passport agree.

Civil and court records

Birth, marriage, divorce and death records, family registration certificates, court decrees, property papers and police certificates. Seals and signatures are marked where they appear; unreadable text is marked in square brackets.

Choose the NAATI certification option for a translation prepared by a NAATI-certified translator, carrying their certification statement, NAATI stamp and credential number. See the birth certificate and marriage certificate pages for those documents.
