What Tasmania says

The rule, in the authority’s own words

Both sentences below are quoted from Transport Services Tasmania, so you can see the exact wording your licence will be read against.

Visitors drive on their overseas licence

“You can drive/ride in Tasmania using your overseas licence if you are a visitor or have a temporary visa”. Your overseas licence is the document you drive on, so keep it with you every time you drive.

If the licence is not in English

“If your licence is not in English you must also carry an official translation or international drivers permit.” Note the word “also”. The translation or permit travels with your licence. It does not replace it.

What each state fines, on the spot and in court, when a licence that is not in English has no translation with it: driving without a licence translation: the fine in each state.

Two ways to meet it

An official translation or an international drivers permit

Tasmania gives you a choice. Which one suits you depends on where you are right now.

An international drivers permit

A permit is issued in your home country before you leave. If you are still at home and can get one, that is fine. If you are already in Australia, you cannot obtain one here for a foreign licence, and a translation is the alternative Tasmania itself names.

An official translation

Tasmania names no translating body, but it does say who may prepare it: the same page asks for “an English translation of your licence by a person accredited to translate”. In Australia that credential is NAATI certification, so for Tasmania we point you to the NAATI certification option, prepared by a NAATI-certified translator.

Where NAATI fits

NAATI certifies translators in Australia. Tasmania does not name it, so we will not tell you that it does. A NAATI-certified translator’s digital stamp carries a scannable QR code, so the credential is easy to check. That is the reason to choose it.

For Tasmania, choose the NAATI certification option, because the page asks for a translation “by a person accredited to translate”. Keep your original licence with you when you drive as well. Our driver licence translation into English page sets out what each state names.

What we deliver

Both sides of the card, in full

We translate everything on the card, so nothing is left for a reader to guess.

Every field

Name, date of birth, licence number, issue and expiry dates, and the issuing authority.

Categories and conditions

The categories or classes you hold, and every condition or restriction, so a reader can see what you are licensed to drive.

Every stamp and code

Stamps, codes and marginal marks on either side are translated or marked in square brackets, never skipped, and the translation follows the layout of the original as closely as it can.

Delivery is by email. The order page shows the speeds on offer, including delivery within 4 hours where available. We do not deliver on Sundays: a delivery that would fall on a Sunday arrives on the Monday. Hiring a car? Hire companies publish their own licence terms, separate from the Tasmanian rule. We have set them out on our renting a car in Australia on an overseas licence page.

Pricing

The full price on screen before you order

Translation is $39.99 per page into English, delivered digitally. Add NAATI certification for $59.99 per page, prepared by a NAATI-certified translator with a digital stamp carrying a scannable QR code. A licence is two pages, the front and the back, and the order page sets that for you.
