Finnish to English
Finnish to English translation
For visitors driving on a Finnish licence, and for anyone who needs a Finnish certificate or diploma in English. Finland can often give you English itself, so check first; otherwise we translate in full, by email, with NAATI certification as an option.
What a Finnish document needs
Three things a Finnish document brings with it
Finland issues many of its own certificates in English, runs in two official languages, and writes its personal number in a form of its own.
Order the English version first
Finland’s Digital and Population Data Services Agency says: “You can order a certificate in Finnish, Swedish or English.” If an English certificate from the population register covers what your reader needs, you may need no translation at all.

The personal identity code
The henkilötunnus is the date of birth, a character marking the century of birth, three digits and a check character. It is copied exactly as printed, the century character included, so it matches every other record you hold.
Finnish or Swedish
Finland has two official languages, so a record may be in Finnish, Swedish or both, and places have two names, Helsinki and Helsingfors. Choose the language most of your document is in; Swedish-language records from Finland go under Swedish.

What to carry with a Finnish licence
What New South Wales says
“If your licence is not written in English, you must also carry an English translation, or an International Driving Permit.” Either one sits beside your Finnish card when you drive.

At the SIXT desk
“Should the valid driver’s licence be in another language or have no photo SIXT will accept a certified translation in English or an International driver’s permit.” SIXT’s rental terms name a NAATI-certified translation as the accepted form.

Planning a long stay? How long you can drive on an overseas licence sets out each state’s limit.
What a careful job includes
Every field, both sides
The ajokortti in full
Everything on the card: name, birth date, validity, the police department or agency that issued it, and a line for every category you hold, with any restriction code explained.
Records not available in English
Parish and older civil records, court decisions and extracts issued only in Finnish, translated with every stamp and register detail.
Study records
Degree certificates, their appendices and study records, course by course with credits and grades as Finland prints them. An unreadable word stays [illegible], never guessed.
Choose the NAATI certification option for a translation prepared by a NAATI-certified translator, carrying their certification statement, NAATI stamp and credential number. See the birth certificate and marriage certificate pages for those documents.
