What a Norwegian document needs

Three things a Norwegian document brings with it

Norwegian has two written standards, two kinds of personal number and a national register that may already speak English.

Bokmål or Nynorsk

Written Norwegian has two official standards, Bokmål and Nynorsk, and a public office may use either. Both come under Norwegian on the order page, and the translation reads each for what it says, whichever standard the office chose.

Birth number or D-number

A Norwegian identity number has eleven digits, beginning with the date of birth. Someone given a D-number instead has 4 added to the first digit. Either is copied exactly as printed, so an Australian office can match it to your other papers.

Ask the register about English

The Norwegian Tax Administration keeps the National Population Register and issues printouts from it. Before you pay for a translation of one, ask whether the certificate you need can be issued in English, which may settle the question for free.

What to carry with a Norwegian licence

What South Australia says

SA accepts “a current licence with an English translation if necessary or an international driver’s licence”, and: “You must carry your licence documents at all times when driving, and produce these and your passport to police on request.”

At the SIXT desk

“Should the valid driver’s licence be in another language or have no photo SIXT will accept a certified translation in English or an International driver’s permit.” Bring the card and the translation together to the counter.
